AREA
Watch the two videos below that explain how to calculate area
This video explains how to calculate the area of a circle giving the answer as both an exact value (in terms of pi) and as a decimal approximation.
|
This video explains how to calculate the area of composite shapes. Sometimes you need to add all the areas of the shapes together and sometimes you might have to subtract one area from the other.

To solve problems requiring you to calculate area (especially for more complicated COMPOSITE shapes) you will need a plan of attack
1. PLAN OF ATTACK: Write down in words, or with diagrams what the area you require is.
2. Use the appropriate formula for each shape. Write the formula down as the first step of your working.
3. Substitute in the values into your formula.
4. Calculate the area of each separate shape.
NOTE: If the question asks for a final answer correct to two decimal places, your working should go up to 4 decimal places. You will round off at the end.
5. Add or subtract the areas you have calculated, according to your plan of attack.
